Yesterday, 8th June, 2020 was a sad day for the Late Sam Okwaraji's Family as well as Nigerian Football at Large. The family mourns the Death of Late Sam Okwaraji's Mother who passed on after Battling with an undisclosed ailment.


Late Sam Okwaraji is an Icon in Nigerian football whose death came as a shock. Okwaraji passed on as a 25 years old while playing for Nigeria in the 1990 World Cup qualifiers game against Angola.




31 Years on from the death of Sam Okwaraji, his Mother, Janet Okwaraji has also passed on to glory. The Nigerian President in a Message released by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity sends his heart-felt Condolence to the Bereaved.




“President Muhammadu Buhari condoles with family of Lady Janet Okwaraji, a teacher and school proprietress, who passed on at 83, leaving a lasting memory of kindness, love and charity as a devout Christian,” The message reads as reported by Goal.com

“The President believes Lady Okwaraji, whose son, Samuel, died in August 1989 while playing for the Super Eagles in a World Cup qualifier, will always be remembered for the sacrifices of the family for the nation.




“President Buhari affirms that the matriarch of the Okwaraji family, like her son, defined simplicity, loyalty and patriotism in many ways as she remained steadfast, believing in Nigeria, despite the vicissitude of life.




“As a mother, who lost her son in an unexpected situation, the President believes Lady Janet deserved to be acknowledged for her resilience and nobility, despite the odds.






The death of Sam Okwaraji's Mum is coming a week after one of Nigeria's Youngster, Victor Osimhen also Lost his Father.
