Bribery and corruption is something we still battle in Nigerian Football. This dubious acts has spread wide across every football competition in the Nation even from the grass root level down to the senior National team.

Just recently,the news of Former Nigerian Super Eagles player, Chinedu Obasi who claims to have been a victim of the fraudulent activity has gotten every one Talking. In our Article today, we take a look at some Nigerian Players/Coaches who have been accused of or May have been a Victim of Bribery in Nigerian Football.

1.SAMSON SIASIA: The former Nigeria Super Eagles coach has been banned for life from every football activities by the Governing body of world football, FIFA due to an alleged Bribery case in 2016.According to FIFA, Siasia is Guilty of accepting“bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches in violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics”. He was also Fined the sum of  $51k (19Million Naira).




2.WESTERHOF: Former Head coach of the Nigeria Super Eagles, Jo Bonfrere has Accused his fellow Dutch National of Collecting Bribes before the 1994 world cup match against Italy. Nigeria were Eliminated from the competition,courtesy of a Roberto Baggio's strike. While speaking with sports radio, Brila FM, Bonfrere was quoted to have accused Westerhof of Match Fixing according to Bonfrere,“He sold the game for $100,000, that’s why we lost against Italy. If you don’t believe, you can ask the Players." Although there hasn't been any form of confirmation as regards to this claim by Jo Bonfrere who was also once the coach of the Nigerian National team.




3.DAVID ALABA:The FC Bayern Munich left back is a player of Nigerian descent born to a Yoruba Father. In 2019, David Alaba revealed that he was asked to pay an undisclosed amount of Money in order to be part of the Golden Eaglet team who took part in the 2007 FIFA U-20 world Cup held in South Korea, a tournament eventually won by the Golden Eaglet. David Alaba has since gone on to Feature for Austria, a country where he was born. Alaba is one of the best Left-backs in world football Today.




4.CHINEDU OBASI: The most recent Case of bribery in the National team was reported by Former Super Eagles Man Chinedu Obasi who has come out to say that he was dropped from the squad to feature at the 2014 FIFA World due to his refusal to pay Bribe in order to be included into the team. According to Obasi,”I was playing for Schalke, I was playing in the Champions League and I was doing well. Two days before the list came out, I was asked to pay some money if I want to be in the team." Obasi last played for Nigeria in 2011 after spending 6 years with the National from 2006, scoring 4 goals in 26 appearances
