In our Footynaija Bout of the week, we take a comprehensive look at the Nigerian Super Eagles Coaches across the Years, Comparing and Deciding which has actually been Favourable and has contributed Immensely to the Progress of the Nigerian Super Eagles Over the Years. Is it the Foreign Coaches or the Local Coaches.

FESTUS ONIGBINDE

Festus Adegboye Onigbinde is a a Nigeria Football Coach who has had double spells of Management with the Nigerian Super Eagles, Firstly from 1981-1984 and then in 2002.
In 1984, Onigbinde Successful guided Nigeria to the Final of the 1984 AFCON final but sadly lost to the dominant Indomitable lions of Cameroon, 3-1. Onigbinde was also on the Touchline with the Super Eagles during the 2002 Fifa world Cup held at Korea/Japan after Taking over from Amadu Shuaibu but the 2002 World Cup turned out to go not as planned as Nigeria were Knocked out of the Tournament in the Group Stage without Picking a single Win. Going by the records, the 2002 Fifa World Cup remains the Worst in Nigeria's History as the Eagles failed to secure a single win, though Got a point. There were a lot of Criticism on Festus Onigbinde as players including Jay Jay Okocha and Julius Aghagowa accused him of Making the Wrong selections.

  PAUL HAMILTON
Paul Ebiye Hamilton was appointed head coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles in the Year 1989 but was Fired after failing to qualify the Super Eagles for the 1990 FIFA world cup
 He went on to Coach the Female National Team where he Guided the Falcons to their First Ever FIFA World Cup Tournament.



LATE SHUAIBU AMADU
Remains the Coach with the Most Managerial Experience with the Super Eagles. Amadu Shuaibu coached the Super Eagles of Nigeria for 7 years in different Occasions. Although his tenure across those Years were very short. 
Amadu Shuaibu had a couple of achievement with the Super Eagles which includes the follows.


  • First Man to Coach Nigeria at the the Fifa Confederations - Saudi Arabia,1995
  • First Indigenous coach to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup- Korea/Japan, 2002
  • Qualified Nigeria For the First Ever World Cup on an African Soil - South Africa, 2010.
  • AFCON Bronze Medalist - Mali, 2002
After his Dismissal in 2002, six years later Amadu Shuaibu was Appointed Coach of the Super Eagles for the Fifth Time. He served for two years and Guided the Nigerian National team to the 2010 FIFA world Cup. He was later Fired in February 2010 and was Appointed technical Director of the National team in May 2013.

Amadu Shuaibu wasn't done with the Super Eagles yet as he still went on to Manage the Eagles in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, on June 10th Amadu Shuaibu was caller up to Glory.

CHRISTIAN CHUKWU
Christian Chukwu Okoro, Appointed Coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria in 2013, Led the team to the AFCON 2004 where the eagles Won bronze medal for the fifth time. Controversially, in 2005 Chukwu Christian was Suspended during the 2006 world Cup qualification Matches. The Super Eagles of Nigeria were without a coach for the Remaining two 'Must win' games against Angola. The Eagles lost both games and Failed to qualify for the first time since 1994. This Disqualification mounted more blames and Criticism on Christian Chukwu.

AUGUSTINE EGUAVOEN
Appointed Head coach of the Super Eagles in June, 2005. He went on to secure the 2006 AFCON Bronze Medal, Nigeria's 3rd in a row and sixth as at this period. In 2010, Austine Eguavoen replaced Swedish Lars Lagerback as a caretaker coach but quickly stepped down as he has no intention taking Over the Super eagles Job fully for the second time . Eguavoen went on to coach Nigeria U-23 side as they seeked for a slot at the 2012 London Olympic games. Eguavoen couldn't lead the Boys as they were knocked out in the qualification phase. He resigned on the 5th December following failure to qualify for the London Olympic games.


SAMSON SIASIA

 Appointed Head Coach of the Super Eagles on the 4th of November 2010,Replacing Lars Lagerback. Siasia Already coached Nigerian team in the Junior Categories with the U-2O and U-23. He was Relieved of his duties in 2011 after Failing to replicate his success with the Junior Teams in the Super Eagles. Siasia was later Reappointed Coach of the Super Eagles in 2016 after the resignation of Coach Sunday Oliseh. In 2017, he was among the shortlisted Names to fill the Vacant Position for Rwanda National Team Coach which Ultimately ended his time with the Super Eagles. currently, Siasia is Serving  life Ban From Every Football Related Activities due to Scandalous Acts which are Punishable By FIFA.

STEPHEN KESHI

The former Togo and Mali Boss took over took over the National team Job in 2011. The 'Big Boss' as Fondly called secured an AFCON 2013 Qualification for the Super eagles and led them to Victory, Triumphing over Burkina Faso Courtesy of a goal from forgotten Hero, Sunday Mba. Keshi also qualified the Eagles for the 2014 world Cup becoming only the First Coach in the History of African football yo qualifying two Nations, Togo and Nigeria for the World Cup.
He also led the team to the FIFA confederations cup in 2013 where they were knocked out with one win in Three group games. Keshi Failed to qualify the Eagles for the Next Edition of the AFCON tournament held in Morocco, 2015. His contract wasn't renewed after the 2014 World Cup exit despite progressing beyond the group stage.
On the 7th of June 2016, Nigerian football Bid Farewell to the Big Boss who passed on to Glory after suffering from heart attack.

SUNDAY OLISEH

 Former Nigerian Super eagles player, Sunday Oliseh coached the Nigerian from 2015 to 2016 with an Impressive stat in just 14 games he managed  with only 2 losses to his name as the eagles coach. He qualified Nigerian for the CHAN tournament in Rwanda,2016 as well as the 2018 FIFA world Cup in Russia. Sunday Oliseh Controversially Announced his decision to quit his Job as the Eagles Gaffer due to Contract Violations, Unpaid Wages and Players Benefits.



SALISU YUSUF
Salisu Yusuf is a popular figure in the Nigerian Professional football league where he has become an Integral figure in the league's progress. Before picking the Eagles job, Salisu Yusuf Mangaged 4 Nigerian league teams across 8 years. In 2016, he had a brief Spell with the Super Eagles.

JOHN FINCH
The English International led Nigeria to her First International Game against Sierra Leone on October 8,1949 Securing a Famous 2-0 victory



JERRY BEIT HALEVI
The Isreali National First Match was against Ghana in a game which had about 100,000 spectators in Lagos. Nigeria were whitewashed with an Humiliating 3-0 Loss.


JÒZSEF EMBER
Ember Coached the Ghanaian National team in 1963 before Sealing the Eagles Job in 1965. The Hungarian was Nigeria's coach for 3 years.

SABINO BARINAGA
The Former Atletico, Valencia and Sevilla Coach Managed the Super Eagles from 1968 to 1969 . The Spanish national led the National team to their First Olympic Games as an independent Nation in 1968.

KARL-HEITZ MAROTZKE
The Experienced German Gaffer who also has coached Ghana and Nigeria was Appointed The Eagles Coach in 1970. Nigeria failed to Participate in any Major tournament across his four years incharge of the Eagles. Karl went on to coach the Botswana National team in 2001

TIKO JELISAVCIC
'Father Tiko' as popularly referred to during his days with the Super Eagles, Led the team to a Back to Back AFCON Bronze Medals.

 OTTO GLÓRIA
The Brazilian National led the Eagles to AFCON 1980 triumph held in Nigeria. The Eagles defeated Algeria with a Convincing 3-0 scoreline in Lagos. Otto also guided the team to the Olympic game held in Soviet Union in 1980.

MANFRED HÖNER

Led Nigeria to an AFCON Silver Medal in 1998, The German National also Took the team to the 1998 Olympic Games held at Korea 

CLEMENS WESTERHOF

  


The Dutch Manger is Unarguably the Best Foreign Coach Nigeria has ever Seen. His exploits with the Super Eagles team Led to one of the Biggest transformations in the history of the National team. Westerhof secured all three Silver wares in his first three years with the Super Eagles, Winning Bronze in 1990, Silver in 1992 and Gold in 1994. He qualified and also led the Eagles to a round of 16 finish at the 1994 FIFA world Cup in what was the First Ever Appearance in the Competition. Many top Nigerian Legends today came into spotlight during the days of Westerhof with Jay Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Rashidi Yekini, Sunday Oliseh and Daniel Amokachi Part of the Golden Generation.
During his Time, Nigeria were Awarded the World Best team of the Year in 1996. 

JO BONFRERE

 Dutch National, Johanes-Fransciscus Bonfrère took over the National team in 1995. He led Nigeria to the Famous Atlanta '96 Triumph, securing Gold Medal for the National team after a stunning comeback and a last minute goal by Emmanuel Amunike which secured a famous victory over Argentina. Jo Bonfrère Further went on to Secure silver Medal for Nigeria in the AFCON 2000 Co-hosted by Nigeria and Ghana. The Eagles lost out to the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in a penalty shoot out.

PHILIPPE TROUSSIER
French Nationa

l coach Phillip troussier qualified Nigeria for the 1998 world cup but was relieved of his duties after qualification to pave way for a more experienced coach to take over.

BORA MILUTINOVIC
The Serbian Gaffer led Nigeria to a famous 3-2 victory over Spain in the 1998 World Cup group stage games but were eventually knocked out in the rounds of 16.

THIJS LIBREGTS
Swedish Coach,Libregts took over the Eagles Job in August 1998 and led the team till October 1999. Nigeria was not Involved in any Major tournament during his tenure. The team even faced a ban in 1998 AFCON tournament held at Burkina Faso.

BERTI VOGTS

The German National signed a four year contract with the Super Eagles in 2007 but resigned after the 2008 AFCON tournament where Nigeria were sent packing in the quarterfinals which happens to be Nigeria's poorest Finish in an AFCON competition since 1982



LARS LAGERBÃCK
The Swedish National was named coach of the Super Eagles in 2010 but was only in charge for 7 games which included 2 wins, 3draws and 2 Defeats.

GERNOT ROHR.
He is the Current coach of the Nigerian Super Eagles. Signed in August 2016, Rohr has been able to put together a young and promising team. He has secured a Bronze medal in Both AFCON and Olympic games. The German Gaffer has so far led the Eagles to 49 games with 29 wins , 11 draws and 9 losses. Recently there's been speculations surrounding his Continuity with the national team after a heavy clause was attached to his new contract.
